The Center for Civil Society and Democracy seeks a qualified candidate for the position of 

Office Manager 

The Centre for Civil Society and Democracy (CCSD) seeks a consultant Manager to help set-up its office to be based in Washington D.C. 

Key responsibilities of this position include renting and registering CCSD’ new office space, maintenance of the organization’s registration, securing a bank account, development of the organization policies and procedures, and providing strategic decisions related to program design and partnership building. The Office Manager will work with the CCSD Grant Manager. Based in Washington D.C., reports to Directors of Center for Civil Society and Democracy, who reports to the Board of CCSD. 

We look forward to adding a full-time, dynamic, self-starter to our team, who is eligible to work in the United States at time of hire, and has the ability to develop the Washington D.C. office while leading with a collaborative and communicative approach. The Office Manager must be flexible and adaptable, and responsive to needs as they arise while still meeting all deadlines. They must also have experience of office management. 

The Center for Civil Society and Democracy in Syria (CCSD) is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to educate the American public about the efforts of non-violent moderate Syrian civic leaders who are working to strengthen civil society and democracy in Syria, and to provide support to sustainable peace-and-democracy-building activities in Syrian communities. To fulfil this mission, CCSD partners with different local organizations, particularly those groups participating in the civil society networks co-established by CCSD and its partner the Center for Civil Society and Democracy. 

Center for Civil Society and Democracy (CCSD) in Turkey was founded in December 2011 by a group of Syrian civil society activists with the aim of supporting sustainable and long term Syrian-led movements for peace, justice and democracy in Syria. CCSD is an independent, non-governmental Syrian non-profit organization with a mission to support and strengthen civil society and democracy and promote the values of freedom, justice and coexistence. CCSD works on empowering Syrian women leadership and participation; civil society capacity development; good governance; peacebuilding, transitional justice, conflict mitigation, and independent media. CCSD’s work takes place in Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraqi Kurdistan.

Key responsibilities of this position will include: 

  • Set-up and expansion of the organization’s office space based on thorough research. 
  • Ensure that all registration requirements are met for opening the office in Washington, D.C. 
  • Maintain the organization’s registration by ensuring that all annual forms are filed (e.g., Form 990 to the IRS and Annual Report to the state of RI, where CCSD is currently registered) 
  • Draft all necessary organizational policies and procedures, for approval by the Board of Directors. 
  • Attend partnership meetings when/if necessary. 
  • Support the Board of Directors in fundraising and/or grant management when/if necessary. 
  • Provide leadership and support on US-focused advocacy efforts 
  • Liaise with CCSD Finance and Program staff to ensure coordination and collaboration between the organizations. 

Qualifications and skills 

Ideal candidates for this position will: 

  • Hold a Master’s degree in Business or NGO Management / Administration, or a related discipline. 
  • Have at least 5 years of experience of working in administration of NGOs, preferably with annual budgets over $2 million. 
  • Have experience with office administration and financial management with excellent team management skills. 
  • Knowledge of anti-corruption and transparency mechanisms, and commitment to transparency in all functions. 
  • Knowledge of federal and state legislation applicable to voluntary sector organizations such as employment standards, charities, taxation, CPP, EI, health coverage, etc. 
  • Have work experience in an international environment and with NGOs working in complex situations. 
  • Have the ability to meet deadlines while following through on multiple projects. 
  • Have the ability to speak and write fluent English. Ability to speak and write in Arabic is preferable but not required. 
  • Be a friendly, flexible, and supportive team member with excellent written and oral communication skills, and analytic skills. 
  • Be supportive of CCSD’s mission and highly dedicated to contributing to our efforts to achieve it. 
  • Be eligible to work in the United States at time of hire with ability to travel to Europe and/or Turkey if required. 


Employment may begin as soon as a candidate is hired and continue for a period of up to one year (January 2019 to December 31, 2019) with possible extension for a permanent position. 

Salary will be commensurate with experience based on a 35-hour work week.
