The Center for Civil Society and Democracy in Syria concluded its sixth workshop for the “Women for the Future of Syria” program at the end of August 2013. The workshop took place at the Kurdish Youth Movement (Tevgra Ciwanên Kurd T.C.K) Office in Derik, al-Haska and was conducted with their collaboration and by Syrians trainers.

The two-day “Advocacy for Peace-Building” event, held on the 15th and 16th August, registered 21 participants from various Syrians regions like Derik, al-Haska, Maabadeh, al-Qahtania, al-Jawadiyah and ‘Alyan. All participants demonstrated a high level of motivation and positive attitude throughout the training.

The workshop focused on several points, including defining the vision and the goals for advocacy and lobbying. It also concentrated on the important role that can be performed by women in the peace making process as well as in the maintenance of security in all regions of Syria. It also emphasized the need for the real involvement of women in civil society.

The trainers used innovative teaching methods to instruct the participants in the principals of public speaking, debating, and teamwork. At the end of each activity, the participants were encouraged to make preliminary plans for their implementation in their local communities in Syria so to promote security at a local level.

Later in the day, the participants were invited to watch the film, Devil Back to Hell, before discussing the important issues related to the role of women in decision-making and peace building as well as the wider challenges facing Syrian women operating in these fields.

At the end of the workshop, the participants provided feedback on the training and the work in which they took part. Their views were largely similar regarding both the workshop and the steps that must be carried out in the future. They said that the workshop was a fantastic opportunity for them to learn new concepts and also to learn a lot about each other.

The session concluded with recommendations for women empowerment and real involvement of women in peace and civil society building in Syria. All that was left was to thank the Center for organizing the event as well as the Kurdish Youth Movement in Derik for their support and hospitality.
