Six months after the start of the Syrian revolution, from September 2011 to January 2012, the League of the Arab States (aka the Arab League) presented three different peace plans to mediate the Syrian conflict. After those efforts, the UN general assembly passed Resolution 66/253 in February 2012 which requested the UN to partner with the League of the Arab States in support of a peaceful solution through a political transition. This led to the appointment of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan as Joint Special Envoy (SE) for Syria on February 23 2012.
