The Joint Special Representative of the Arab League and UN Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi( appointed 7 August 2012) called for negotiation talks between the Syrian opposition delegation headed by its Chief Negotiator, Mr. Hedi Albahra, and the Syrian Government delegation headed by its Chief Negotiator, Amb. Bashar Ja’fari. This negotiation was planned in accordance with the Geneva Communique of 30 June 2012 and it was conducted in two rounds. The first round of Geneva II talks began in Montreux on 22 January 2014 and took place in Geneva from 23 January 2014 through 31 January 2014. The second round of the intra-Syrian Talks was held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva from 10 February through 15 February 2014 in Geneva. The discussions centered on the agenda for the second round of the Talks. The Syrian Government delegation prioritized discussing fighting terrorism while the Syrian opposition delegation prioritized discussing the establishment of a Transitional Governing Body. After this round, UN Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi resigned in May 2014 and the new UN Syria Special Envoy Stephan De Mistura was appointed in July 2014.
