Transitional Justice is a series of judicial, and non-judicial measures implemented by states to address the grave human rights violations they have inherited. These measures can include prosecutions, truth commissions, reparations and various forms of institutional reform and commemorations.
In March 2012, CCSD launched the “Let’s Discuss” project, which aimed to raise awareness among Syrians about the nature and mechanisms of transitional justice. We also consulted many Syrians on the best way to implement transitional justice in Syria in the future. More than 300 women and men participated across three Syrian governorates; Damascus, Damascus Countryside and Hassakeh. Women’s participation rate was more than 40 percent. In 2013, we conducted a workshop on transitional justice in Turkey, with 30 women participating.
Between 2013 and 2014, 975 Syrian men and women both inside Syria and neighboring countries participated in workshops on transitional justice to raise awareness about the concept and its mechanisms. A survey of nearly 1,000 Syrian men and women was launched. Over the past years, we have published many articles and studies on the subject of transitional justice as well as its mechanisms.
